Salmon and Sweet Potato Supper for Dogs

This home-canned Salmon and Sweet Potato Supper combines fresh salmon, sweet potatoes, green beans, and parsley into a convenient, shelf-stable meal for dogs. Pressure canning allows you to prepare pet food in larger batches while controlling the ingredients that go into your dog's bowl. The recipe is packed directly into pint or half-pint jars without added liquid because the salmon naturally creates its own broth during processing.

Why Preserve Homemade Food for Your Dog?

One of the greatest advantages of preparing food for your dog at home is knowing exactly what goes into the bowl. You choose the proteins, vegetables, herbs, and other ingredients rather than relying entirely on commercially prepared foods.

Home preservation takes this idea one step further. Instead of preparing a fresh meal every day, pressure canning allows you to prepare larger quantities when ingredients are readily available and preserve them for later use. Buying meat or produce in bulk, shopping seasonally, and preserving what you grow can also help make better use of your food budget while reducing waste.

It also makes good sense from a preparedness standpoint. A pantry containing food for the people in your household should include food for the animals who depend on you. Having preserved pet food available means you have another feeding option during power outages, supply disruptions, emergencies, or simply those weeks when life gets busy.

Why Salmon, Sweet Potatoes and Green Beans?

Dogs are omnivores and can eat a varied diet containing proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vegetables. In Preserving for Your Pets, I use this variety throughout the dog recipes rather than relying on one protein or one style of meal. Salmon works especially well for home preservation because it provides the protein foundation while also producing natural juices as it processes.

Sweet potatoes and green beans add plant-based variety without overwhelming the recipe, while a small amount of fresh parsley adds flavor. Parsley is one of several dog-friendly herbs I use throughout the book, along with rosemary, basil and oregano.

This is also an exceptionally simple recipe to prepare. There is no stock to make, meat to brown, or mixture to simmer before filling the jars. The ingredients are layered directly into the jars and pressure canned.

Salmon & Sweet Potato Supper

This Salmon & Sweet Potato Supper combines fresh salmon, sweet potatoes, green beans, and parsley into a wholesome, home-canned meal for dogs. Packed without added liquid, the salmon creates its own flavorful broth during pressure canning for an easy, ready-to-serve meal straight from your pantry. The following recipe is from my book, Preserving for Your Pets: Healthy, Homemade Meals and Treats for Dogs and Cats.

Yield: 14 pints or 28 half-pints

Ingredients

8 lbs. (3.6 kg) fresh salmon fillets, skin on and bones removed, cut into 2-inch fillets

3 lbs. (1.4 kg) sweet potatoes, peeled and diced (8 cups/1.1 kg yield)

2 lbs. (900 g) green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces (4 cups/480 g yield)

½ cup (15 g) fresh parsley, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Evenly distribute the salmon chunks into each jar, followed by evenly distributing the sweet potatoes, then the green beans. Sprinkle a pinch of parsley into each jar.
  2. Do not add liquid. The salmon will create its own broth during processing.
  3. Wipe the jar rim with a washcloth dipped in vinegar. Add lids and rings and hand tighten.
  4. Process in a pressure canner at 10 PSI or according to your elevation and canner type. Process for 110 minutes for both pints and half-pints.

Ingredient Tip: This same recipe can be created with other fresh and saltwater fish such as trout, Atlantic or Pacific mackerel, and sardines. Remove the bones from trout and mackerel before packing the jars.

People Often Ask

Q: Can I use another type of fish instead of salmon?

A: Yes. You can substitute trout, Atlantic or Pacific mackerel, or sardines. Remove the bones from trout and mackerel before packing the jars.

Q: Why isn't liquid added to the jars?

A: Salmon naturally releases its own juices during pressure canning, creating broth inside the jar. Adding water or broth is not necessary for this recipe.

Q: Can I use quart jars for this recipe?

A: Yes. You may process this Salmon & Sweet Potato Supper in quart jars. Because of the larger jar size and density of the packed ingredients, increase the processing time to 160 minutes. Process quart jars in a pressure canner at 10 PSI or according to your elevation and canner type.
